Castroville is commonly known as the "Artichoke Capital of the World." In 1947, Castroville crowned its first Artichoke Queen. Her name was Norma Jean. She went on to become the famous Marilyn Monroe.
If California's economy was compared on its own to that of other countries, it would rank 7th in the world.
The Country Store in Baker has sold more winning California State Lottery tickets than any other location in the state.
The city of Pacific Grove has a law stating that the molestation of monarch butterflies is illegal.
California is home to the world's oldest known living things; a 3,500 year-old tree named "General Sherman", and a stand of bristlecone pines that are 4,000 years old.
Hollywood was originally created to escape the numerous patents held by Thomas Edison that prevented film companies from turning a decent profit. Many believed by moving across the country (the original film capital was Fort Lee, NJ), no one would bother them with patent laws due to the distance. As a result, many studios made Hollywood home, and Paramount and Universal were both born as a result!
