Silver Spoons & Evil Spirits

Many Norwegian traditions are steeped in superstition. And the Norwegian wedding crown is no different. Historically, Norwegian brides would wear ornate crowns decorated with small spoon-like shapes dangling loosely. These spoons would create a beautiful sound as the bride moved about, said to ward off evil spirits. As Norwegian brides often dance vigorously, it was thought the happier the bride and the more she danced, the more spirits she would ward off, as the charms chimed about with her movements. Modern brides have turned to more modest and simple crowns, if they choose to wear them at all. Though, even if they don't wear the crown, it is not uncommon for Norwegian brides to incorporate some kind of accessory that produces a similar sound to ward off evil spirits.

Two historic photos, taken by Solveig Lund, show more traditional wedding crowns. While the more modern crown can be purchased or rented from Ingebretsen's in Minnesota!
